Mike Portnoy has completed recording his drum elements for the subsequent Dream Theater album.
The drummer, who shockingly returned to the New York progressive metallic outfit in 2023 following a 13-year absence, introduced by way of Instagram on Saturday (March 30) that that was his final day recording for the as-yet-untitled sixteenth Dream Theater album.
Portnoy wrote: “At present is my final day behind this package for some time…sure certainly, my drums for #DT16 are finished!!”
He continued: “However that’s just the start…work will now proceed within the coming months forward on guitars, bass, keys, vocals, percussion (to not point out writing lyrics, mixing, mastering and so forth and so forth).”
The drummer added, “I actually can’t reveal something extra as we’re (purposefully) retaining a really tight lid on any & all information at this early stage,” although he admitted that the band “are all BLOWN AWAY and sooo extraordinarily enthusiastic about what we’ve created!”
He signed off: “We can’t anticipate you all to listen to this…however endurance, all can be revealed in due time…😉😎 #DreamTheater2024”
Portnoy co-founded Dream Theater (initially named Majesty) in 1985 with guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung, whereas the three had been college students on the Berklee School Of Music.
The band discovered widespread reputation with their second album, 1992’s Pictures & Phrases , and its single Pull Me Underneath , and had been credited with re-popularising the progressive metallic subgenre.
Portnoy, who was additionally a key songwriter within the band, stayed with Dream Theater till 2010, when he left to pursue different tasks. He was changed by Mike Mangini.
