This Black Music Month, Tiny Desk is giving the women their flowers. We’re releasing 9 Tiny Desk live shows from Black ladies artists, from veterans who’ve paved the best way for what we hear at present in Black music, to those that are carving out their very own paths.

After a second of reward in her set, Kierra Sheard stated jokingly, “I don’t wanna make this Tiny Desk Sunday morning service.” That capability to unapologetically communicate on religion in any location, even the Tiny Desk, is a trademark of Gospel music and a energy of Sheard’s. Since her solo debut at 17, Sheard has launched music that retains God’s phrase on the forefront, whereas being packaged to achieve audiences who won’t be within the church pew on Sunday mornings. That music has garnered her a number of Dove and Stellar awards, in addition to a number of Grammy nominations. She and her brother, producer and drummer J. Drew Sheard II, realized music ministry beneath the tutelage of their mom, Karen Clark-Sheard, and aunts, who make up the legendary gospel group The Clark Sisters.

In our assembly previous to filming her Tiny Desk, Sheard requested “Can I get not less than one run?” To which our staff replied “Completely — a couple of!” These soul-stirring runs are current on this uplifting medley of latest cuts from her newest album, All Yours, and tracks from her 20-year catalog. “You Ain’t Seen Nothing But” aptly introduces Sheard’s presence on the Tiny Desk. I discovered myself regularly singing “All Yours” and “Hold On” for days after the efficiency. Her testimony in “It Retains Taking place” and “One thing Has to Break” moved many in our workplace as Sheard declared, “What I can’t do, God can do!” And in basic church “flip to your neighbor” vogue, she implored the viewers to “Flip to any individual and say, ‘I’m speculated to be right here!’ ” There is no such thing as a doubt Sheard is meant to be on the Tiny Desk.
